Saigon Central Post Office

Ho Chi Minh City

This magnificent building, constructed between 1886 and 1891, is one of the most iconic French colonial landmarks in Ho Chi Minh City. Its exterior features pale yellow walls paired with green window grilles, exuding a strong sense of vintage charm. The spacious interior, with its arched ceilings and iron beams, makes one feel as if they have stepped into an old European train station of the 19th century. To this day, it still retains its postal functions, making it a must-visit spot for tourists to send postcards and experience the former glory of Saigon.

Detailed Content

History and Architecture: French Romance and East-West Fusion The Saigon Central Post Office is located at Paris Commune Square (Công xã Paris), facing the Red Cathedral (Notre-Dame Cathedral) across the street. It was designed by French architect Villedieu (although often mistakenly attributed to Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower, its steel frame structure is indeed heavily influenced by Eiffel's style). The architectural style blends Gothic, Renaissance, and French colonial features, making it one of the best-preserved French buildings in Vietnam. Upon entering the hall, the soaring vaulted ceiling design is not only beautiful but also serves a practical function of ventilation and heat dissipation in an era without air conditioning.

Must-See Highlights In addition to appreciating the building itself, the following details are key points of interest:

  • Two Giant Hand-Painted Maps: Upon entering the hall, look up at the walls on both sides, which feature the "Map of Saigon and Its Surroundings in 1892" and the "Telegraph Line Map of Southern Vietnam and Cambodia in 1936," witnessing the geography and communication history of the time.

  • Vintage Wooden Phone Booths: On both sides of the hall entrance, there are rows of intricately carved antique wooden phone booths, originally used for long-distance calls, now a popular photo backdrop, with some booths equipped with ATMs.

  • Portrait of Uncle Ho: At the end of the hall, in the center, hangs a large portrait of Ho Chi Minh, which serves as the most solemn visual focal point of the post office.

  • Souvenir Shop: The circular area in the center of the hall sells a variety of Vietnamese-themed souvenirs, stamps, and postcards.

Visiting Tips

  • Ritual Experience: Since you are at the post office, it is highly recommended to buy a postcard and a stamp, sit on the long wooden bench in the center of the hall to write, and then personally drop it into the mailbox to send back to Taiwan or to friends and family. The postmark here is very commemorative.

  • Best Photo Spots:

    • Exterior of the Main Entrance: It is recommended to step back to the side of the Red Cathedral or stand in front of the square garden to capture the entire yellow building along with the iconic large clock.

    • Indoor Axis: Stand in the center of the hall entrance and shoot inward to capture the perfect symmetrical structure of the building and its deep spatial sense.

  • Best Time to Visit: Morning (before 08:00). Arriving before the group tourists flood in allows you to enjoy the spacious French hall alone, with softer lighting.
