The Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica, commonly known as the "Red Cathedral," is one of the most prominent and important landmarks in Ho Chi Minh City. It was built between 1877 and 1880, with all the building materials imported from France, including the iconic red bricks of the exterior. Detailed Content

History and Architecture: A Red Classic Across Centuries The Red Church is located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, right next to the Central Post Office. Designed by French architect Jules Bourard, its architectural style blends features of Neo-Romanesque and Gothic styles. Most notably, the red bricks used for its exterior all come from Toulouse, France, and after more than a hundred years of wind and sun, they still retain a bright red color without any moss or fading, showcasing a high level of craftsmanship.

Must-See Highlights Although the interior is currently inaccessible, there are still many details worth appreciating on the building's exterior:

  • Double Tower Bell Tower: The two spires, reaching up to 58 meters, pierce the sky and are a classic image of Ho Chi Minh City's skyline.

  • Statue of Our Lady of Peace (Regina Pacis): In the small garden square in front of the church stands a statue of the Virgin Mary weighing 4.6 tons. This statue was brought from Rome, Italy in 1959, and it was rumored to have "wept" in 2005, causing a sensation at the time.

  • Sides and Rear of the Building: Besides the front, the sides of the church showcase exquisite flying buttress structures and window designs, allowing for different angles of geometric beauty as you walk around.

Visiting Tips

  • Best Photography Spots:

    • Front Panorama: Standing at the very front of the garden square in front of the church, you can capture both the statue of the Virgin Mary and the double tower church in one shot, making it the most iconic postcard view.

    • Side View: From Diamond Plaza or the entrance of the Central Post Office, you can photograph the church's red brick wall in contrast with the modern traffic.

    • Café View: There are several high-rise cafés or rooftop bars nearby where you can overlook the entire Red Church from above, providing a more spectacular view.

  • Renovation Notes: Currently, some areas around the church may have scaffolding or fences for maintenance, so be sure to find angles to avoid them when taking photos. Although the interior is inaccessible, it remains an absolute must-visit photo spot when in Ho Chi Minh City.
