Famous Scenic Spots of Chang'an

Ninh Binh

Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex is located in Ninh Binh Province, about 90 kilometers from Hanoi. It shares the same geological features as Ha Long Bay, but unlike Ha Long Bay, the mountains and waters of Trang An weave between land and rivers, earning it the nickname "Inland Ha Long Bay." Visitors will take a hand-rowed wooden boat, rowed by local women, along the winding rivers, passing through a series of low limestone caves (there are a total of 48 water caves). This area also served as a major filming location for the Hollywood blockbuster "Kong: Skull Island," showcasing the most pristine and wild natural beauty of Vietnam.

Detailed Content

Attraction Details Boat Route Selection (Routes): You need to decide when purchasing tickets, changes cannot be made midway There are 3 main routes in Trang An, each taking about 2.5 to 3 hours:

  • Route 1 (Cave Exploration): Pass through 9 caves and 3 temples. Suitable for travelers who enjoy cave exploration and adventure, but due to the numerous caves, it can feel claustrophobic, and the scenery changes less frequently.

  • Route 2 (King Kong Filming Location + Balanced Route): Pass through 4 caves and 3 temples. This is the most popular route, with wide and beautiful scenery, passing by the King Kong filming location and the palace, making it the best for photos.

  • Route 3 (Longest Cave): Pass through 3 caves and 3 temples. The highlight is passing through the Dot Cave, which is up to 1 kilometer long, and also near the King Kong filming location.

Special Introduction: King Kong: Skull Island Filming Location

  • Location: Located at the end of Route 2 and Route 3 (Khe Coc Island area).

  • Current Status: The "indigenous village" set built for the movie was completely dismantled in 2019 to comply with UNESCO World Heritage protection regulations.

  • What to See Now: Although the movie props are gone, the natural landscape (steep limestone peaks, deep valleys, and water areas) still retains the mysterious, isolated atmosphere from the film. There are usually movie poster stands for tourists to take photos, and the area has now been planned as a cultural experience space.

  • Fun Fact: Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts was amazed by the "unreal primitive beauty" of this place when scouting locations, which is why he chose it as King Kong's homeland.

Must-Visit Highlights

  • Cave Passing: This is the most unique experience in Trang An. The boatman will remind everyone to lower their heads as the boat thrillingly brushes past the stalactites overhead, which is very exciting.

  • Vu Lam Palace: An ancient building located in the middle of the water, surrounded by mountains and rivers. Especially on the return trip of Route 2 or 3, the sunset shining on the palace and the water surface is a favorite for photographers.

  • Mountain and Water Reflection: Unlike the rice field scenery of Tam Coc, the water quality in Trang An is very clear, allowing you to see the underwater vegetation, with mountain peaks reflecting like a mirror.

Visiting Tips

  • Sun Protection and Hydration: The entire journey lasts about 3 hours and there is absolutely no shelter on the boat. Be sure to bring a hat, sunglasses, an umbrella, and enough drinking water, or you may easily suffer from heatstroke.

  • Restroom Break: Be sure to use the restroom before boarding, as once you are on the boat, there are almost no opportunities to go ashore except for a few temple stops.

  • Tip Etiquette: The boatman (usually female) rows for 3 hours, which is very hard work. It is recommended to give a tip of 20,000 to 50,000 VND per person at the end of the trip as a gesture of thanks.
